One of my New Year's resolutions (in addition to learning how to darn socks and taking a CPR class) was to write more regularly for my column at the Faster Times. I started small, re-launching my "Friday round-ups"—succinct summaries of the week's most provocative food politics gossip.
Here are the last few, in case you've missed them:
• Joel Berg's Fridge, South L.A. Bans (new) Fast Food, and Walmart Joins Let's Move
• Policy Level Changes vs. Grassroots Initiatives to Transform Food Economies
• And my favorite, the Aspartame Coverup, Elitist Foodies Suck, and Obama Approves GMO Beets
I've also been publishing a series of interviews with leaders of this country's food justice movement. A few weeks ago, I talked to Michel Nischan, founder of Wholesome Wave (the organization that is—among other things—encouraging low-income families to buy fresh produce by doubling the value of food stamps at farmers' markets.) I also interviewed Nikki Henderson, the new executive director of People's Grocery in West Oakland. People's Grocery provides subsidized CSA shares to West Oakland residents, partners with a local hospital to offer nutrition education workshops, and is working with the community to grow the food justice movement in West Oakland from the ground up. Stay tuned for an interview with Barbara Finnin, executive director of City Slicker Farms.
Do you know any food justice leaders who I should know about? Please e-mail me at hannahmwallace at gmail (or post a comment below) and I'll do my best to cover them here.
